Khabaram raseeda imshab (Tonight there came a news)

The very first time I heard Persian song few years back in my friends wedding concert, i fell in sever love with this language, Persian is a very poetic, soft and song-like language and has been described as one of the most beautiful languages of the world, though Persian is to some minor extent being thought here in Pakistan and being spoken here, but still not familiar to be speak by everyone.



Apart from all this it makes you feel happy and energetic when it comes to Persian being sung by Fareed Ayaz renowned for his Qawali. Surfing through a Vimeo a week ago i found this song of Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad sung in Coke studio session 5. A week has passed since i heard this song very first time, but not a single day has passed in the entire week that i missed watching this clip of him.
Khabaram raseed imshab ki nigaar khuahi aamad;

Sar-e man fidaa-e raah-e ki sawaar khuahi aamad.

Ham-e aahwan-e sehra sar-e khud nihada bar kaf;

Ba-umeed aanki rozi bashikaar khuahi aamad.

Kashishi ki ishq daarad naguzaradat badinsaa;

Ba-janazah gar nayai ba-mazaar khuahi aamad.

Balabam raseed jaanam fabiya ki zindah maanam;

Pas azan ki man na-maanam bacha kar khuahi aaamad.

English Translation:

Tonight there came a news that you, oh beloved, would come –

Be my head sacrificed to the road along which you will come riding!

All the gazelles of the desert have put their heads on their hands

In the hope that one day you will come to hunt them….

The attraction of love won’t leave you unmoved;

Should you not come to my funeral,

you’ll definitely come to my grave.

My soul has come on my lips (e.g. I am on the point of expiring);

Come so that I may remain alive -

After I am no longer – for what purpose will you come?


Fareed ayaz and Abu Muhammad Performing Khabaram Raseed Imshab in Coke studio.

According to Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad this qawali was composed by their ancestors who are descendants of Mian Samat Ibrahim, a disciple of Amir Khusro.


The qawwali has been presented in Raag Bageshri and is a composition of a ghazal written by Amir Khusro. The ghazal expresses sufi philosophy, using imagery of the worldly love for a beloved as a means of representing love for God. Khusro writes that he just heard his beloved is coming to him and he is ready to lay down his life in wait for the arrival as he feels this dying man might be given new life with the anticipated union.

Coke Studio’s modal music treatment of this track renders new, previously unheard versions of qawali.
